  • [S267] Leila Ritchie Mize and Jessie Julia Mize. Authors/compilers (no copyright): Threads of Ancestors, Telford--Rictchie--Mize. (University of Georgia Printing Department: Athens, Georgia, January 1956); reprint (Graphic Composition Inc: Athens, Georgia, 1978). Daughters of the American Revolution Library, Avenue D, Washington DC, Downloaded from www.internetarchive.org. Of primary interest are the Martin & Moorman family section and the Martin family names scattered throughout the Rictchie/Richey section. Even though it appears to be well documented and sourced, quoting Bible records, wills, deed records, etc., some of the conclusions are erroneous. The author gives a good account of her Martin line from Thomas Martin, Sr. But, on page 163, with a statement from the 1929-1932 Virginia DAR State Historian, Jennie T Grason, the families of Charles Martin & Patsy Moon and Thomas Martin Sr. get mixed together. Ms Grayson says that Thomas & Abraham were the oldest sons of Charles and Patsy Moon Martin. They were not. I have tried to only cite the transcribed Bible pages, wills and other documents and not conclusions drawn from other sources. Or I've confirmed documents with independent research. Instead of footnotes or endnotes, the sources are embedded throughout the text of the book. The Jacob & Catharine Martin (of Anderson County SC) Bible Record was preserved by their granddaughter Mrs. Margaret Wilson Toney of Commerce, GA and transcribed by the author.

  • [S974] Anne C Porcher: Hon Alfred M Martin: Dr. Samuel Davies Martin. Editors, Researchers and Compilers: The Martin Family, 1680-1934, copyright not renewed. (self-published: Brooklyn, 1935); reprint (online by the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/martinfamily168000porc/page/n1/…, uploaded 2019 by Allen County Public Library Genealoogy Center). Internet Archive, www.archive.org, Downloaded to computer 2021: Original memeographed pages were self-published in 1857, by Dr. Samuel Davies Martin (b1791) of Winchester, Kentucky under title Genealoogical Record of the Martin Family. It was distributed throughout the country to relatives asking for corrections and additions. The manuscript was republished in 1886 by the Hon. Alfred M. Martin; then corrected and added to, by Anne Carrington Martin Porcher in 1933 and 1934. Fifty two additional, numbered pages were inserted by Mrs. Porcher with the inserted page numbers noted beside the subject persons. It appears that Mrs. Porcher included the original pages and kept her inserted pages, showing additions, corrections and errata, separate. Dr. Samuel Davies Martin was the son of Major John Martin making him 1st cousin to Millie Martin who married 1st Hugh T Middleton, Jr and 2nd Samuel Savage, Jr. Major John Martin was a brother of Millie's father, Charles Martin. Therefore, Dr. Samuel Davies Martin should have had first hand knowledge of Millie, her parentage, her marriages and her children. As of 2021, the book can be viewed or downloaded at www.archive.org using the search parameters of : Title- Martin Family and Creator- Porcher.
  • [S975] Rev/Parson Mason Locke Weems. Author: God's Revenge Against Murder, or, The Drown'd Wife of Stephens's Creek. (Hobby & Bunce: Augusta, Georgia, 1807, 2nd edition); reprint (John Adams: Philadelphia, 1808, 4th edition), As of May 2021, 12 editions (published as late as 1823) have been found by this reseaarcher. The first edition and it's date has eluded us, however, one description found in the Internet Aarchive 'Open Library' states that it was first published in 1807 with the 2nd edition also being published the same year. WorldCat states that there have been 38 Editions published between 1808 and 1980 (which obviously includes modern day reprints). Presented as a lesson on how parent's mistreatment of children can lead to disastrous results, it reads almost like a fable or play. Eliminating the quoted dialogue, that is surely fiction, there is data regarding the Middleton family that sounds accurate and is supported by documented research. The book is written in the flowery speech pattern of the era and there are many pages of 'preaching' to sort through in order to find the family history data that is revealed within.
